Snapshot

Snapshot

She holds her life in an old, tattered hold-all
Clutched close to her chest
In case her past escapes.

Old sepia stills of mother, father,
Sisters, cousins,
And one of a son long lost, not forgotten.

The rotten, grasping bastard
Took almost all that she had,
Drank it, and vanished.

Now, vaguely ball-shaped and huddled
She shuffles un-seen and silent
From behind a bus
Sent flying skywards
In seconds
By an oblivious motorist.

Her memories set free
On Angel’s wings

Dancing with White Horses

Here's the first poem I ever had published:

Dancing with White Horses

He stands at the shoreline
Barely daring to breathe,
Time waits.

She turns, Waves;
   Slips silently
Into cool water,
Washing herself away.

He stares helplessly
Into Distance,
As she dances with white horses,
Alone with the ocean.

Mirror, Mirror

Mirror, Mirror.

You watch me dissecting myself
In scalpel-sharp sunlight
Falling into your smooth surface,
Cool and silent as a summer lake.

You have eyes everywhere,
Concealed in shop windows
And polished chrome plate.
Puddles stare upwards,
A wide smile hides
In the side of a wine glass.

You let me bathe in visible radiation
A narcissistic prisoner
Caught in your glassy gaze
Appraising familiar features.

Yet you never answer my question.

I wrote this one a few years ago in response to a task set at a workshop at the Writers' Summer School at Swanwick in Derbyshire

God

I thought I'd kick things off by posting my most recent poem.  I wrote it a while ago while I was attempting to explore the darker side of my imagination.

God

All her life
she loved me without knowing,
so I told her.

Picked the perfect moment,
chose a quiet spot
away from others who might see
and be affected.

Some things are,
after all, best kept private.

Held her carefully,
like a Sparrow with a broken wing..
Explained that things
would never be the same again.

We kissed, and
as I stole the sparkle from her eye
she called me God

Welcome

Hi, I just thought I'd better say a few things about this blog, most of which will be included in my profile when I get around to editing it properly. It's early days yet, haven't done a great deal of blogging to date so forgive me if things seem a little disorganised, at least to begin with.
So, what can you expect to find here?  Well I shall be showcasing my own work (mainly poetry) and I'll also be featuring the work of other poets/writers that I find interesting.  Please feel free to leave any comments you might be inclined to make and above all else...enjoy!!
